Vertical growth per year
In healthy South Florida conditions — full sun, regular watering during establishment, well-drained soil — Clusia gains roughly one to two feet of vertical height per year after it settles in.
Year one is slower than year two. In the first season, the plant is putting most of its energy into root development rather than visible above-ground growth. Don't judge the hedge by how much it grew in the first six months.
Lateral fill-in is faster than height gain
The more important number for most homeowners is how fast the hedge closes laterally — when does it stop looking like a row of individual plants and start looking like a solid wall.
A 7-gallon hedge planted at correct spacing (1.5 to 2 feet on centre) typically reads as a continuous screen within 6 to 9 months. A 15-gallon hedge at tight spacing often looks finished from install day. The starter size and spacing are the two biggest variables in how quickly you get privacy.
What speeds up Clusia growth
Full sun is the biggest accelerator. Clusia in continuous direct sunlight grows faster, fills denser, and holds colour better than the same plant in partial shade. If your hedge line gets shade for more than a few hours a day, expect slower growth — and consider whether Podocarpus is actually the better plant for that spot.
Consistent watering in the first 60 to 90 days after installation is the single most important care action. The root system needs to establish during that window. Drought stress in the first season can slow the hedge down by six months or more.
Fertilising during the growing season — especially in sandy coastal soil that drains nutrients quickly — helps maintain steady growth once the plant is established.
What slows Clusia growth
Partial shade is the biggest inhibitor. Clusia planted on the shaded side of a building or under an existing tree canopy will grow at a fraction of the rate of the same plant in full sun.
Overwatering after the establishment window can cause root issues. Once Clusia is established — typically after three to four months — it's drought tolerant and doesn't need constant irrigation.
Sandy soil with no amendment drains nutrients fast. Regular fertilising compensates for this, but without it, growth can be noticeably slower.
The size you start with matters more than growth rate
Most homeowners asking about growth rate are really asking: how long until I have real privacy? The answer depends more on the starter size you install than on how fast the plant grows.
A 3-gallon Clusia will give you privacy in 12 to 18 months. A 15-gallon gives you privacy on install day. If you need immediate screening — pool enclosures, street-facing lines, neighbour sightlines — it's worth buying up in size. If budget is the priority and you can wait, 7-gallon at tight spacing is the most cost-efficient path to a finished hedge.
